This is a fantastic organization that has been supported from its inception by grassroots members of the community and citizens of Pensacola.

This beautiful museum is a tribute to a former resident of Pensacola who rose in the ranks of the Air Force to become a decorated fighter pilot and the first African-American Four-Star General. More poignantly, it is the home of his dear mother, who ran a school within its walls. Many senior residents still recall ‘Ms. Lillie’s School”.

The “Chappie” James Flight Academy is an excellent and vital asset to our community and youth. It has provided a no-cost Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math education through its summer program. The week-long program is taught by our area military personnel, including flight instructors, active/retired military, and civilian pilots. This is a wonderful example of the collaborative efforts between our city and military bases. The highlight of each week is when each student gets to pilot an aircraft at Ferguson Airport.

Students who have graduated from the program have gone forward to great things, including earning scholarships and awards to enter college. Others have gone directly into the workforce through apprenticeships. Many have also chosen the path of obtaining their pilot’s license and even joining the military. Past students return to mentor new attendees. Many parents comment on this excellent program and how it has positively served their children.

This organization is superbly well organized and does an excellent job of managing its resources and support received. The facility is beautiful and well maintained.

In recent years, there has been so much activity and growth that a larger facility is greatly needed. The opportunity to provide training to our youth who will enter the workforce here in the Pensacola area is phenomenal.

Why am I in grand support of this organization? Because my daughter (Journey Washingtonhigh) was one of the first students in the Inaugural Summer Flight Academy Program at the new facility. She is a testimony to what youth can accomplish with support and engaging programs such as this. The educational benefit and pride she gained from the program and piloting will be with her forever. My daughter has gone on to become the Sunshine State Scholar (STEM award), Hall of Fame student at her high school, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and 3rd in her class. She has received admission to Vanderbilt University and Rice University.

I am sure you will hear many wonderful stories about the General “Chappie” James Museum and Flight Academy. At the annual gala event, the descendant family is joined by the area political establishment, business leaders, dignitaries, and military leaders, along with community members and student speakers in honoring General James and demonstrating support for the continued success of the Flight Academy. Our city government and policies must support those organizations that are giving back to the community in such a positive way.
